Porn 3

My first post in this series was about the problem pornography poses in our lives. It is not just a physical addiction, but a spiritual battle, and therefore what Jesus accomplishes on our behalf is crucial – our identity as sons and daughters in Jesus Christ begins to affect what we do. My second post in this series addresses the spiritual warfare and battle that needs to be waged against lust. I gave you a bunch of Scripture to marinate in so that God can begin to change your mind and heart with His truth. One of the most dangerous things we do as humans is to trust in our own or others’ “wisdom” rather than God’s wisdom and truth. I encouraged you to put yourself in a position to hear from the Lord through prayer, fasting, waiting, and getting help.

This post is for after all of this. How do you fight and war against sin? How do you truly struggle against the presence and advancement of lust in your life? The greatest command in the Bible is not a negative (“do not” do something”), but a positive (“do” something). Love God. To fight the battle over sin, the victory will not be won only by avoiding things, but also by beholding God, seeking God, holding onto God. The Bible is extremely wise in dealing with lust, and I want to share some biblical and practical advice for killing lust and sin in your life … for waging war.

urlRomans 8:12 says that we need to quit feeding our addictions, sin, lust, and destruction. We don’t owe our former, sinful self anything … except War and Battle. Verse 13 says that we need to Kill sin … or it will kill us. “Put to death the deeds of the body.” Who’s sin? Your own sin. Me for mine, you for yours. Focus on yourself, not on others. Stop the victim-mentality, and stop looking at others. You need to own up to your sin and MAKE WAR against it. In Volume Six of John Owen’s Mortification of Sin says, “Be killing sin, or sin will be killing you.” How do you make war with your sin?

You and I have a weapon for this battle, and a lot of defenses. Look back to Ephesians 6:17. What is the only offensive weapon we are given? The Word of God. God’s Word is powerful. You need to know your Bible people, because the Word of God is your only offensive weapon against sin. Romans 8:30 says that the War we make on sin is the evidence of our calling, because when God calls us, forgives us of our sin, makes us right with Himself, gives us a new identity in Christ, and is faithful to complete that work until our death and eternal life with Him, that process called “the Christian life” is marked by a pronounced decline of and victory over sin.

blackjack-strategySo, if you and I are going to War with our sin, we need a strategy and a plan. We need a War Plan. A great place to start is with John Piper’s 3 part series called “How to Kill Sin.” I highly recommend all three of them to you.

Knowing and loving God means we want what God wants. When we walk with Him and follow Him, we want to do what delights God and brings Him glory. Romans 8:13 tells you, YOU, are to put to death the deeds of the body … by the Spirit. This means that you need to know the promises of God in His word toward you and your struggles … and YOU believe them and apply them.

“the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27).

“With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.” (Mark 10:27).

Once you steep yourself in God’s Word and know how to fight temptation with God’s promises, pray and seek the Lord for next steps on biblically and practically waging war against sin. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Fast from food for a few days, and every time you feel the desire to eat, pray and get into the the Word and remember that you don’t live by bread alone. Use your initial desire for food as a reminder to get on your knees.
  • Fast from TV/Movies/iPhone, and every time you have an impulse to use them, use that impulse to press into Jesus.
  • Set daily/hourly iPhone calendar reminders to stop and pray through some of God’s promises.
  • Surround yourself with Scripture – on your bathroom mirror, in your car, on your computer (sticky notes) and on your hands.

  • Rejoice in every victory, no matter how small.
  • Get rid of your computer, or at least leave it in a open, public place in your home. If you live alone, consider getting a roommate. People who deal with porn addiction THRIVE is secrecy.
  • Get rid of your Smartphone – I can’t imagine a worse idea than putting the Internet in the pockets of every porn addict out there. Get a dumbphone. Seriously. Don’t roll your eyes at me. You don’t need it. Remember 8 years ago when you didn’t have a Smartphone? You survived.
  • Get Covenant Eyes or some other software that will monitor your use of your computer and cell phone. Tell 2 or 3 close friends about your lust problem, and ask them to meet and pray with you weekly, and make one of them your Covenant Eyes accountability.

The Puritan preacher and author Thomas Brooks says for every one look at your sin, you should look 5 times to your Savior. Don’t let false guilt and shame keep you from Jesus.

urlThis is life. This isn’t a game, and we are not meant to waste our time here on Earth. We are to know and love God, seek Him while He may be found, and battle our sin into the dust. So take up God’s Word, rely on Him and His promises, and seek Him in the midst of your own struggles and sin. Here are some more verses for you to marinate in as you seek the Lord and His promises for you.

Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.

Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
